In-home sessions, tips and tricks to help get the photos you want | Wichita, KS photographer

In-home family photography is the perfect way to capture a family exactly how they are.

Here are a couple tips and tricks to get you ready!

Preparing your home

Together, we will decide on the best location for your photos. I am looking for the rooms that have the best natural light. Late morning or afternoon tends to be the best for lighting.

Tidiness: please do not feel like you need to deep clean the entire house before I arrive. It’s pretty easy to hide a couple toys, clothes or clutter under the bed or in another room (well, that’s what I tend to do when we have company) – but don’t feel like you have to clear everything out. Your home still needs to tell your story and show that it’s lived in.

Length Of Session:

My lifestyle family sessions rarely last more than an hour. Typically, that is when young children are at their limit but still gives adequate time to get a beautiful family collection together.

Preparing Your Kids

When you are preparing your kiddos for an in-home family session, please tell them I am coming over to be silly & have fun with them. I will want to see how high they can jump, see their silliest faces & see their most favorite toy or prized possession. And amongst all the silliness & games, I will ask them to give you their best bear hugs and kisses, and I just bet we will see some beautiful, genuine, smiles and laughter.

What To Wear

Wardrobe should be comfortable and reflect who you are. Choose clothing that gives you freedom of movement, keeps you warm/cool, and won’t require a lot of maintenance throughout your session. Stay with classic looks.

– Neutrals are timeless (but pops of color are beautiful too and can really portray your own unique personality)
– Long flowy skirts/dresses or simple basics matched with textures (scarfs/cardigans) photograph really well.
– As a family, wearing complimentary colors is great – preferably not everyone wearing black t-shirt and jeans. Moms, it’s great if you can pick your outfit first (something that you really love and feel beautiful in!) and then coordinate the rest of the family around you!

– For in home sessions, personally, I recommend avoiding wearing predominately blacks and really dark colors, neon colors, logos, transition lens & tiny complicated patterns.

Activities

Last but not least, it’s a great idea to think about some of the things your family enjoys together.  Does your 3 year old love to dance? Does your 6 year old enjoy helping you in the kitchen? Does your sweet baby giggle when you make a funny face or play peek-a-boo? If there is something that your family enjoys, please let me know so we can incorporate those things into your session – it will make your collection of images so much more meaningful and personal.
